The lifespan of decking depends largely on the material, installation quality and upkeep. In Berkshire, where outdoor conditions vary, choosing the right type of decking for longevity is just as important as how it’s maintained.
Wooden decking can last from between 15-30 years. Composite? Up to 40. Below we’ll summarize the decking options and subframes we supply and install for our clients in Berkshire. Visit our dedicated wooden and composite decking pages to learn more.
Wood
Timber remains a popular choice, with softwood and hardwood both widely used. Pine, a softwood, is affordable and readily available across the UK. When pressure-treated properly, it can last up to 15 years, assuming general maintenance is followed. This includes cleaning, sealing and checking for moisture damage.
Hardwood, such as Oak or Yellow Balau, can last 25 years or more. Oak, being native, is a traditional option and has a high resistance to wear if cared for appropriately. Yellow Balau, an imported hardwood, is dense and known for its durability. However, both types of timber are subject to weathering and will change colour unless oiled regularly.
Composite
Composite decking has grown in popularity across Berkshire and the UK. It offers longer lifespan with less ongoing care. Capped composite boards — available from brands such as NeoTimber, Millboard, Trex and Timbertech — include an additional protective layer that adds resistance against staining, UV resistance and moisture.
Depending on the brand and installation, composite decking can last 25 to 40 years. Some boards come with warranties reflecting this. They are resistant to common problems like rot, warping and splitting. Though more expensive initially, many of our clients opt for composite as a longer-term solution with fewer yearly maintenance demands.
Subframes
Subframes are rarely discussed in this context. However, your choice of subframe material can add a decade to the lifespan of your deck. Using deck tape on softwood can offer moisture protection and prevent rot. While today companies such as NeoTimber, Trex and Millboard offer composite subframe options.
Make the Right Choice for Your Property
Decking life expectancy is influenced by materials, exposure and how well it’s looked after.
While treated softwoods offer a lower-cost route, hardwood and composite options are often chosen for longevity and appearance. In Berkshire, customers frequently weigh initial outlay against ongoing effort. Whether you prefer natural timber or a manufactured alternative, selecting the right material for your environment and usage can mean decades of reliable service with minimal fuss.
